How to Protect Your Birdies Raised Garden Bed from Underground WildlifeUpdated 10 days ago

When placing your Birdies Raised Bed on grass or bare dirt, it’s essential to protect against digging rodents like moles, voles, gophers, ground squirrels, and chipmunks. Here’s how to secure your bed from underground wildlife:

  1. Surface Preparation: Start by preparing the surface (grass or bare dirt) according to your standard method.

  2. Additional Protection: Before laying down cardboard, place stainless steel hardware mesh over the surface. Anchor it with ground stakes for stability.

  3. Layering: Lay the cardboard over the hardware mesh and continue with bed preparation, including adding 1 inch of pea gravel, stone, or logs if desired.

  4. Mesh Extension: Allow the hardware mesh to extend 2 inches from the sides of the bed after filling it with soil.

  5. Trimming: Use tin snips or a similar tool to trim away any excess mesh.

  6. Covering: Optionally, cover the exposed mesh with mulch, stone chips, pea gravel, or other pathway materials for a clean look.

Mesh Selection:

Choose stainless steel hardware mesh with a fine grid size. This will allow beneficial insects and earthworms to move freely while preventing larger animals from accessing your garden.
