Guava Seed Germination and AvailabilityUpdated 11 days ago

While starting guavas from seed might seem like an appealing option, it's not typically recommended. Many guava varieties are hybrids, which means their seeds do not reliably produce plants that are true-to-type. This means that even if a seed germinates, the resulting plant might not resemble its parent in terms of fruit quality or other characteristics. Furthermore, some guava varieties are sterile, meaning they do not produce viable seeds at all.

Challenges with Guava Seeds:

  • Hybrid Varieties: Many guava varieties are hybrids, and their seeds are unlikely to grow true-to-type, resulting in unpredictability with fruit quality and plant traits.
  • Sterile Seeds: Some guava varieties produce sterile seeds, meaning they won't germinate.
  • Difficult Germination: Even when viable, guava seeds can be difficult to germinate due to their hard seed coat and specific germination requirements, such as warm temperatures and consistent moisture.

Why We Don't Offer Guava Seeds or Plants

At this time, we do not carry guava seeds or live plants like Tongan guava or Tropical Pink guava. Due to the challenges associated with guava seed viability and germination, we currently don't have a grower who can reliably supply guava seeds. While we'd love to offer live plants in the future, we do not expect to add them this year.

Finding Guava Plants

If you're looking to start your guava-growing journey sooner rather than later, we recommend reaching out to tropical plant nurseries in your area. Local nurseries are often the best resource for finding live guava plants that are well-suited to your specific region. Additionally, selecting plants locally allows you to ensure the quality and condition of the plant before taking it home.

Online Options: There are several online sellers that offer live guava plants, but availability may vary depending on state regulations. Some states have restrictions on which plants can be shipped or sold, so checking with local nurseries is often a more reliable and immediate option. If a local nursery has what you're looking for, you can avoid shipping costs and take home your plant on the same day.
